Climate Action & Emissions Reduction

A key element of PTW’s climate strategy is the reduction of market-based Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at the Freiburg and Umkirch sites. PTW has set a target to reduce these emissions by 75% by 2030 compared to the 2023 baseline year.

Scope 1 covers direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources we control, like heating systems and our company vehicles. Scope 2 includes indirect CO2 emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity.

Since 2024, PTW has been sourcing certified renewable electricity for its Freiburg and Umkirch sites. This has led to a substantial reduction in reported Scope 2 emissions compared to previous years. However, Scope 2 emissions have not been fully eliminated, as emissions associated with externally supplied charging infrastructure and other indirect electricity consumption may still be included in the inventory.

In addition, PTW operates photovoltaic systems that have the potential to supply around 25% of the electricity demand at its HQ and production sites under suitable operating conditions. The company is also increasing the share of electric vehicles within its fleet and continuously evaluates measures to improve energy efficiency.

Our climate activities are supported through our participation in the Zielgerade 360 initiative, a program established by the Southern Upper Rhine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Energy Agency Region Freiburg to support organizations in developing and implementing climate-related measures.

In June 2024, PTW conducted a kick-off workshop together with representatives of the Zielgerade360 initiative and department managers. During this workshop, climate-related objectives, key areas of action and potential reduction measures were identified and discussed.

PTW’s first greenhouse gas inventory covered the Freiburg and Umkirch sites and was based on 2023 data. The reporting scope has since been expanded to include QRM, meaning that the current greenhouse gas inventory now covers all PTW production sites.

Following the inclusion of QRM in our greenhouse gas accounting, PTW has now started a pilot project to collect greenhouse gas data from all international subsidiaries. The aim is to develop a broader understanding of emissions across the PTW Group and support future reporting activities.

Solar photovoltaic systems and machine exhaust heat recovery are among the measures implemented at our Umkirch site to support energy efficiency.
