Yuri Simeonov honored with the
2019 Dietrich Harder Master’s Thesis Award

Yuri Simeonov was awarded the 2019 “Dietrich Harder Master’s Thesis Award” at the 50^th annual meeting of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP)
in Stuttgart on 20 September, for his outstanding thesis in the field of medical radiation physics.

In his thesis titled “3D range-modulator for scanned particle therapy: development, Monte Carlo simulations and experimental evaluation”, Mr. Simeonov describes the design, development and manufacturing of a 3D range-modulator for scanned particle therapy and investigates its potential for clinical use.
The new modulator allows to obtain a highly conformal dose distribution in the target volume using one energy, thus reducing treatment time significantly.

Yuri Simeonov, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Life Science Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen in Gießen, is currently working towards a PhD degree.

About the “Dietrich Harder Master’s Thesis” Award

The “Master’s Thesis Award” sponsored by PTW has been awarded annually by the DGMP since 2016 to recognize outstanding achievements in the field of medical radiation physics and promote scientific commitment. In 2019, the award was renamed the “Dietrich Harder Master’s Thesis Award” in honor of late professor Dietrich Harder, an outstanding medical physicist and honorary member of the DGMP.
