Freiburg Medical Technology Specialist PTW Moves into Former Haufe Building

Freiburg, July 23, 2020 - After a good two years of renovation, PTW Freiburg GmbH will complete the move into its new building on July 24. The new building is located right next to the company's headquarters and was bought from the Haufe Group in 2018. The company, which produces and sells high-precision dosimetry measurement technology for radiation therapy and diagnostic radiology worldwide, now has a total operating area of 20,000 square meters. Substantial emphasis was placed on sustainability during the renovation.

The company’s shipping department and finished parts warehouse had already been relocated to the new facilities in June 2020. Logistics, IT and Quality Assurance/Regulatory Affairs as well as the R&D department with 60 employees, which had previously worked in another location, are the last departments to move to the completely renovated building at Lörracher Strasse 9 by the end of July. PTW invested several million euros to convert, modernize and sustainably design the building from the 1980s to meet its needs using the latest technology and construction methods. “Sustainability was very important to us during renovation. Among other things, this is demonstrated by the fact that we now generate even more solar power ourselves and use it directly on site,”

Dr. Christian Pychlau, Managing Partner of PTW, stated. “With the new building, we have created the space to continue to grow in Freiburg in the long term.”

The architects also moved in

The renovation was planned and implemented by Sacker Architekten from Freiburg, who also moved into the building. Their managing partner Christopher Höfler is enthusiastic about his new workplace. “It's a great, special building – a real child of its time from the early 1980s with correspondingly striking architectural elements. We enjoyed working on its elegant appearance and restoring it to some extent. Among other things, the building’s shading system fitted with white cloths was extensively modernized and brought up to date.

The PV system, which PTW had installed in the former Haufe building, supplies up to 100,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.

500 square meter PV system

The photovoltaic system supplies 99 kilowatt peak (kWp), which means a yield of up to 100,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electric energy per year according to standard test conditions. In comparison: a four-person household consumes approx. 4,000 kWh of energy per year. The new offices are characterized by a good indoor climate. In addition to modern cooling and lighting, noise-reducing ceilings and carpets ensure a pleasant, quiet working environment. The new building is also completely barrier-free. Modern workspaces for the family-owned enterprise - PTW has thus set the course for a successful future.

About Sacker Architekten:

Sacker Architekten is one of the largest architectural firms in southern Baden with 50 employees. The buildings of the firm, founded in 1992 and managed by Christopher Höfler and Detlef Sacker, are characterized by a clear and reduced formal language. The designs are developed with particular attention to the respective location and future expansion possibilities. With the help of master planning, Sacker Architekten provides its clients with important orientation and indicates where a plot of land, a building complex or a residential district can be developed. The firm, which has grown strongly in recent years, specializes mainly in industrial, office, residential and administrative buildings and also has a great deal of expertise in the areas of school and public pool construction. Well-known projects in the region are the Testo buildings in Titisee, the Neue Messe and the Staudinger Gesamtschule in Freiburg. Since March 2020, the architects have been working in their large office with approx. 1,000 square meters of space in the former Haufe Akademie at Lörracher Strasse 9, 79115 Freiburg, a building which they renovated themselves. Since then, employees have access to large, quiet work and meeting rooms. Exchanges are promoted in project niches.
